ABSTRACT

On the received view, illusions and hallucinations are fundamentally
different. Unlike illusions which involve our surroundings, your
hallucination of a dragon does not. On the one hand, there are no
dragons, and on the other, your dragon hallucination is private to
you. In this presentation I argue that contrary to the received view,
hallucinations, like illusions, do involve the surroundings. I defend
this conclusion by focusing on three claims that explain how the
proposed view accommodates the above observations, before
turning to four objections and their responses.
